A large Peterbilt 579 mirror assembly, 3D scanned with a handheld scanner and split into mirror, arm and bracket. The arm was converted to an editable STEP model so the client could modify it, and delivered as a Fusion 360 project.

The client wanted to be able to modify the arm of a large Peterbilt 579 mirror assembly, which meant turning the physical part into CAD. There was no print at the end of this one: it was a scan-to-CAD job from start to finish.

We covered the mirror assembly in reflective marker targets and scanned it with a handheld Revopoint MetroX. The markers give the scanner fixed reference points, so the many overlapping passes needed for a part this size line up into a single mesh.

We then split the scan into three parts: the mirror, the arm and the mounting bracket. The arm was rebuilt as an editable STEP model that any CAD package can open and change. The mirror and bracket were left as mesh, so the client has an accurate reference to design against.

The work was delivered as a Fusion 360 project, plus a separate STEP file for each mirror.
